Your Body And Your Mind

How and Why Your Body and Your Mind Are Linked

What do we mean by Bio-psychosocial?

Bio-psychosocial essentially means that we are affected by a variety of factors in our daily lives that need to be taken into account when it comes to medicine and healing:

  • The bio, which is your body, is the biological aspect of it, and any pathologies that affect the physiological body.

  • The psycho is the behaviours, emotions, and/or thoughts that affect the way each and every one of us copes and ends up dealing with pain, physical or emotional.

  • The social, which is how our environment affects our presentation for the better or the worse. For example social support, work environment, and socioeconomic status.

All of the above factors increase the allostatic load which is the accumulation of stressful life events and factors.

The biopsychosocial model has been used by medical professionals since the late 70s. It is used to help optimise patient care by taking into account all aspects of their lives in order to improve or change areas that may be putting the patient’s health under strain. It also serves as a reminder for practitioners and patients that everything we go through in our daily life has the potential to affect us in a way that might help us on our path to recovery. However, it also has the potential to create damage and hinder our innate ability to heal. In osteopathy, we call this the total lesion concept.

Your mind inherently affects your body. A few years ago, scientists discovered Neuropeptides, which convert emotional patterns into physical presentations.

Because of this, it is extremely important to have a good support system, from friends, and family, to medical professionals. Also, Make time during the day for yourself. ‘You time’, can be whatever you want it to be; from a gym session to a hairdresser appointment, there are no wrong answers. Try and take time to recharge and be by yourself so you can re-centre, recharge and think about what it is that YOU need.

Offloading the mind in order to offload the body is essential in our busy society where nothing ever seems to stop.

Please always remember that if you feel overwhelmed, never hesitate to seek help from a licensed medical professional. There is no shame in struggling. There is no shame in being human. We end up regretting a lot more of the things that we don’t do, than the things we did do. Trying is the best thing that you can ask of yourself.
